To be brief, yes, Wheelhouse Counseling offers sessions using online video conference platforms. This can be a very helpful option for people with busy schedules and/or difficulty traveling to the office.
This format is referred to by a number of names; Technology-Assisted Services, Web-Conferencing, Tele-Medicine, TeleMental Health, TelePsychology, E-Counseling, E-Psychotherapy, TelePsychiatry, Internet-Based Psychotherapy, Online Counseling, or Distance Counseling. Our practice utilizes HIPAA-compliant technology to protect client confidentiality. However, every form of digital technology is vulnerable to hacking. If you are comfortable with the privacy risks of tele-therapy, our staff will gladly discuss this option with you.
PREPARE FOR PRODUCTIVITY
Psychotherapy is an important, sacred conversation, and this is true even when client & therapist are not in immediate physical proximity. Please consult the checklist below so that you have a meaningful tele-therapy experience.
- To protect privacy, our staff utilizes password protected WiFi and requests that you do the same.
- To ensure good video, your internet connection will need a bandwidth of at least 384 kbps. It will also be helpful to arrange your seating so that the lighting allows for clear picture.
- To ensure good audio, it will be helpful to use a physical space with minimal background noise and echo. Our staff absolutely wants to see and hear you clearly.
- To ensure productivity, please arrange for a distraction-limited environment. Children, pets, televisions, phone ringers, mail delivery, etc. can – and will – interrupt a session. It will help you experience a valuable session if these variables are adequately managed.
Our staff does not conduct sessions over the phone or via video conference while clients drive their vehicles, except in emergencies. Counseling can be an emotional experience, and we do not want to risk the safety of our clients by facilitating an emotional experience in a dangerous context.
